Mango Dal

Mamidikaya Pappu or Raw mango dal is delicious and easy to make south Indian dal recipe which made with toor dal and raw mango.

  • 1/2 Cup Split Pigeon Peas / Toor Dal
  • 1 Medium Sized Raw Mango, Peel and Cubes
  • 1 Medium Sized Onion, Chopped
  • 1 Medium Sized Tomato, Chopped
  • 2-3 Green Chilies, Chopped
  • 1 Tsp. Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to Taste
  • 1 Tsp. Cumin Seeds
  • 2 Tbsp. Ghee
  • 1/4 Tsp. Asafoetida
  • 10-12 Curry Leaves
  • 2-3 Dried Red Chilies
  • 1 Spring Coriander Leaves, Chopped


  1. Wash and soak the dal in water for atleast 30 minutes. 

  2. Add dal, mango cubes, salt, turmeric powder, onion, tomatoes and green chilies in pressure cooker with water and mix well. Cover with lid and cook for 4-5 whistles or until tender. 

  3. Open the lid and mash the dal. 

  4. Heat the ghee in tadka pan, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, dry red chilies. Pour the tadka over the dal and mix well. 

  5. Cook for extra 5 minutes and garnish with coriander leaves. 

  6. Serve hot with rice recipe.
